Saudi Arabia Adds Video Games to School Curriculum

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education has formally approved adding electronic gaming — both educational and competitive — to the national education system across school levels, as part of curriculum reform tied to رؤية السعودية 2030.

In early 2026, three Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the Ministry and Savvy Games Group, establishing game development and esports as formal components of secondary, university, and technical and vocational education. The work is coordinated with the National Center for Curricula, which will embed gaming concepts into formal courses and create school activities promoting a positive esports culture.

The integration focuses on game development fundamentals, coding, digital storytelling and design, alongside esports strategy and team collaboration. Officials say the aim is to strengthen digital literacy, computer science, teamwork and creative expression among students.

Training, labs and competitions

Teacher training forms a key part of the agreements, with specialized workshops, forums and upskilling programs to help teachers adopt gamification and AI-based teaching methods. Savvy Academy is set to receive official accreditation as an educational provider, offering structured programs in game design and development focused on career readiness and entrepreneurship.

Games-based learning is also being integrated into Madrasati, the national e-learning platform, with interactive content and specialized educational games. Plans include digital educational laboratories based on simulation, and gaming labs and innovation hubs within technical and vocational institutions for hands-on industry projects.

National-level student competitions in game development and esports are being launched, including a "Play to Learn" contest to identify and nurture local talent. For families across الرياض, جدة and beyond, the move signals a growing recognition of gaming as a pathway to skills and careers, not just entertainment.
