Saudi Arabia Boosts Education with AI and Digital Reforms

Saudi Arabia is advancing one of the largest education transformations in the region, backed by heavy investment, mandatory technology curricula, and a nationwide shift to digital learning. Education stands among the biggest items in the 2025 state budget, with around SAR 201 billion allocated to the sector — roughly 16% of total public spending.

Starting from the 2026 academic year, a mandatory artificial intelligence curriculum introduced in August 2025 will see more than 6 million public school students, from primary to high school, study AI, coding, and algorithms. AI is now a required subject in public education, and more than 13,000 teachers have already been trained in AI applications. A national professional development platform has delivered training and resources to over 470,000 education professionals.

Aligning education with the job market

These efforts sit under the Human Capability Development Program (HCDP), the main national framework linking education outcomes to labor market needs across early childhood, K-12, higher education, and lifelong learning. Its targets include raising kindergarten enrollment by 2025, increasing the number of Saudi universities in the global top 200, improving the Kingdom's standing on the World Bank Human Capital Index, and boosting Saudization of highly skilled jobs by 40% by 2025.

The Ministry of Education is also expanding digital student services. The Madrasati platform delivers digital content, virtual classrooms, and e-learning to millions of public school students, while Rawdati serves early childhood and kindergarten learning. A national Virtual School provides distance education for students in remote areas, and the Ikhtebar platform supports centralized digital examinations. At the higher education level, the FutureX initiative forms a unified digital ecosystem for university studies, professional training, and lifelong learning.

For families across Riyadh, Jeddah, and beyond, the reforms mean broader access to technology-focused learning and clearer pathways from classroom to career — part of a long-term push to prepare students for a rapidly changing workforce.
