Saudi Arabia has announced plans to upgrade roughly half of its national electricity grid as demand from industry, data centers, and artificial intelligence continues to climb. The move aims to modernize, automate, and expand transmission and distribution networks that serve homes and businesses across the Kingdom.
Electricity demand reached a record 349.16 TWh in 2025, while peak load hit 77.08 GW. The rapid growth is driven in part by expanding industrial activity and the rising energy needs of data centers and AI computing, which require stable, round-the-clock power.
To support the expansion, a new 2.3 GW gas-fired power plant has secured a power-purchase agreement, and a tender has been launched for 12 GWh of battery storage. Battery storage helps balance supply and demand, store surplus generation, and strengthen reliability during peak hours.
Why it matters
A more resilient grid means fewer disruptions and steadier service for residents and businesses, especially during the high-demand summer months when cooling pushes consumption to its peak. The upgrades also position the Kingdom to attract energy-intensive investments such as data centers.
Reported regulated tariffs include an industrial rate of SAR 0.18 with commercial rates reported in the range of SAR 0.20 to SAR 0.32 However, the available information does not confirm that these rates apply to every customer category, and no new 2026 tariff schedule has been established. There is no customer application, fee, or online service tied to this grid-upgrade announcement.
