SFDA Approves 2 Saudi AI Medical Software Tools

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has granted marketing authorization for two Saudi-developed medical software products powered by artificial intelligence, clearing them for use in the Saudi market. The tools are Dental IQ, designed to support dental diagnosis, and SAARIA, developed for ophthalmic (eye) diagnosis.

Both products are classified and regulated as software as a medical device (SaMD), meaning they must meet the same rigorous requirements as physical medical devices. To gain approval, they had to comply with the Medical Devices Marketing Authorization requirements and the authority's digital health and AI guidance framework, and to submit through the dedicated online medical device portal rather than any general government service platform.

What the approval required

Authorization for AI-enabled medical software involves strict conditions. Developers must provide complete technical documentation of the software, algorithms and architecture, along with evidence of clinical association and both technical and clinical validation for the intended medical purpose. They must also document risk management covering data bias, cybersecurity, privacy and unintended outcomes.

Importantly, the framework requires clear human oversight and limits on automated decision-making, keeping healthcare professionals responsible for final clinical decisions. Manufacturers must also maintain lifecycle and change-management procedures for software updates, re-validation and ongoing post-market monitoring, and operate a quality management system aligned with international standards.

The authority applies a risk-based classification system for such products and continues to conduct stringent safety and performance reviews. It has recently rejected AI-powered software that did not meet its standards, including diabetes prediction applications, underscoring that approval is far from automatic.

For residents and patients, the milestone signals a growing role for locally developed, regulated AI tools in Saudi healthcare, while assuring the public that these technologies remain subject to careful oversight and that doctors, not algorithms, hold the final word on diagnosis and treatment.
