Saudi fencer Khalifa Al-Omairi has claimed the bronze medal in the Senior Men's Individual Épée event at the 2026 World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong, held in July 2026 — the first medal ever won by Saudi Arabia at the sport's world championships.
The achievement marks the first time a Saudi athlete has stood on a World Fencing Championships podium, a milestone widely celebrated at home as an unprecedented moment for Saudi individual sports and for the national fencing program.
Al-Omairi's medal run stunned observers. Entering the championships as a low seed, ranked around 160th, he reached the quarterfinals where he defeated Japan's Koki Kano — one of the world's top-ranked épée fencers — by 15–12, guaranteeing himself a podium place and, with it, the Kingdom's first world fencing medal. In the semifinal he fell narrowly to Switzerland's Lucas Malcotti, reported at 13–12, sharing the bronze medal position.
With this result, Saudi Arabia becomes only the second Arab country ever to win a men's world championship medal in fencing, after Egypt.
In recognition of the historic feat, the board of the Saudi Fencing Federation approved a financial reward for Al-Omairi and his coach, Hossam Al-Din Mustafa. The bronze adds to a strong year for the fencer, who earlier won two medals at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh — bronze in individual épée and silver in team épée.
The result is a significant boost for a growing generation of Saudi athletes and points to the rising international profile of the Kingdom's individual sports programs.
