Grand Mosque Kept Cool at 22–24°C Year-Round

The Grand Mosque in Makkah is kept at a steady 22 to 24 degrees Celsius through an integrated cooling system with a capacity of about 155,000 refrigeration tons, designed to maintain comfort for worshippers throughout the year.

The network covers roughly 1.5 million square meters, spanning prayer halls, facilities, and courtyards. It is served by two main cooling stations: Shamiya, with a capacity of about 120,000 refrigeration tons, and Ajyad, at about 35,000 refrigeration tons.

Beyond temperature control, the system includes advanced filtration and air purification, with reported air-cleaning efficiency of up to 95 percent, along with ultraviolet sterilisation during the air-treatment process. The setup operates continuously to support the large numbers of worshippers and pilgrims during peak periods, including the Hajj season.

Wider expansion for 2026

For 2026, the broader cooling effort was expanded across the holy sites, reaching Masjid al Haram, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. The additions include extra air conditioning, misting fans, shaded walkways, cooling canopies, and heat-reducing road surfaces.

For residents and pilgrims from Riyadh, Jeddah, and beyond, the upgrades aim to make time spent at the holy sites more comfortable and safer during the hottest months, reducing heat stress for the millions who gather there each year.
