The Public Investment Fund (PIF) board has approved a new 2026–2030 strategy, endorsed in April 2026, that frames the coming period as a continuation of the fund's long-term role in economic transformation under رؤية السعودية 2030.
The updated plan focuses on building competitive domestic ecosystems, unlocking the potential of strategic assets, maximizing long-term returns, and driving both economic diversification and quality-of-life improvements. As part of the shift, PIF is restructuring its portfolio from 13 strategic sectors into 6 integrated economic ecosystems, a move designed to strengthen links between sectors and widen partnership and investment opportunities for the private sector.
PIF's long-term target remains around $2 trillion in assets under management (AUM) by 2030, more than double mid-decade levels. As of early 2026, the fund's AUM stood in the range of about $930–941 billion, placing it among the world's top five sovereign wealth funds and leaving roughly $1.06 trillion still to close. Some public analyses now point to a raised upper-end ambition of about $2.67 trillion by 2030.
Why it matters
PIF is positioned as the primary vehicle for diversifying the economy away from oil, with major roles in technology, energy, tourism, housing, entertainment, and events. The strategic review preceding the plan sharpened focus on artificial intelligence, events and entertainment, and housing as key domestic growth areas — sectors that directly touch residents' daily lives.
Reaching the target is expected to require sustained annual AUM growth of roughly 9–15 percent, continued government capital transfers, reinvestment of dividends, controlled debt issuance, and a supportive oil-price environment. At the same time, the fund maintains spending discipline, including a previously approved minimum 20 percent spending reduction across many portfolio companies and development entities, while preserving its long-term growth path.
