Rafha Removes 4,320 Tons of Waste in One Month

The municipality of Rafha in the Northern Borders Region announced the results of a month-long field campaign that saw the removal of 4,320 tons of household waste and the closure of six non-compliant commercial establishments, as part of ongoing efforts to improve public health and urban appearance.

During the same period, municipal teams carried out 516 inspection rounds, split between 221 health and markets inspections and 295 visual distortion inspections. The campaign recorded 30 municipal violations, issued 89 warnings to businesses, and closed six establishments found to be in breach of health, cleanliness, and urban appearance regulations.

How enforcement works

Commercial licenses in Rafha are issued, renewed, amended, or canceled through the national municipal platform Balady. When a business is found in violation during a campaign, field teams document the case, issue an on-site warning or violation ticket, and log the decision in the municipal system linked to Balady license records. Serious or repeated violations can lead to immediate closure and the start of license suspension or cancellation procedures.

Under the national Waste Management Law, non-compliant businesses may face temporary closure, license suspension of up to six months, license cancellation, and fines reaching up to 10,000,000 SAR, with penalties doubled for repeat offenses within three years. Operators handling municipal solid waste were required to regularize their status within two years of the law's entry into force.

Business owners can submit proof of rectification and request the lifting of a closure through Balady or in person at the Rafha municipality headquarters on Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Musaad Street.

The waste removal drive forms part of broader environmental-sanitation and visual-distortion programs, which have also included clearing construction and demolition waste, removing random camps, and repairing sidewalks and public infrastructure — all aimed at delivering a cleaner, safer environment for residents.
