Riyadh Library Marks World Calligraphy Day

The King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh hosted a series of activities marking World Calligraphy Day, celebrating the art of Arabic calligraphy through an exhibition, workshops and competitions. The program was tied to 13 August 2026.

Visitors explored an exhibition dedicated to Arabic calligraphy alongside a rich display of the library's holdings, which included more than 200 books and around 7,000 manuscripts. The library said its Arabic calligraphy collection stands at 6,475 books, underscoring its role as a major reference for the art form.

The event featured 15 workshops that gave participants hands-on experience with different calligraphic styles, while children's competitions encouraged younger visitors to engage with the craft. A dedicated sales corner offered calligraphy tools for enthusiasts wishing to practise at home.

Why it matters

Arabic calligraphy is a cornerstone of the Kingdom's cultural heritage, and events like this give residents and expats in Riyadh a chance to connect with a living tradition. By combining historic manuscripts with practical workshops, the library aims to pass the art on to a new generation and keep it part of everyday community life.

Families, students and lovers of the arts were among those who took part, making the day a welcome addition to the capital's cultural calendar.
