Saudi Arabia Completes Global E-Waste Initiative

Saudi Arabia has announced the successful completion of a global initiative to regulate electronic waste, carried out in three countries — Paraguay, Rwanda, and Zambia — as part of the Kingdom's wider sustainability drive. The project was signed in June 2023 and launched in November 2023.

The initiative produced three national regulatory frameworks for e-waste management, each built on circular-economy principles. It also delivered a specialized best-practices guide covering the handling and regulation of electronic waste.

As part of the work, teams carried out studies on implementation costs and on extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees for electronic devices in the three beneficiary countries, giving each nation practical tools to build sustainable waste-management systems.

Why it matters

The Kingdom's broader e-waste effort is led by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), which has set a target of recycling 90% of electronic products by 2040. Domestically, the separate non-profit "Recycle Your Device" initiative accepts items such as laptops, desktops, phones, printers, modems, and accessories.

For residents and expats across the Kingdom, these programs signal a growing national focus on responsible technology use and cleaner recycling practices. As electronic devices become a bigger part of daily life, structured e-waste systems help reduce environmental harm and support the goals of a circular economy in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
