Saudi Arabia has officially designated 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence, positioning AI as a central driver of economic progress, competitiveness and human development. National coordination is led by the Saudi Data and AI Authority, which frames the technology as a core engine of the Kingdom's transformation under رؤية السعودية 2030.
The move builds on the National Strategy for Data and AI, the policy framework embedding artificial intelligence across priority sectors including government services, health care, education, energy, mobility and quality-of-life programmes. The strategy is organised around six pillars: ambition, competencies, policies, investment, innovation and ecosystem. A Cabinet decision in March 2026 added a dedicated coordination layer to align ministries on shared programmes and fast-track deployments toward 2030.
The national targets are concrete. The Kingdom aims to train 20,000 data and AI specialists by 2030, with more than 11,000 already trained as of early 2026. AI is targeted to contribute over 74 billion SAR to the national economy, while officials aim to attract 75 billion SAR in AI investments and build an ecosystem of around 300 start-ups by 2030. The Kingdom is also pursuing a top-15 global ranking in AI, top-10 in open data and top-20 in AI research output.
For residents, the impact is designed to be broad. The SAMAI literacy initiative has reached over one million participants in its first wave and expanded in 2026 as SAMAI 2 across 11 government ministries to support workforce upskilling. HUMAIN, a national full-stack AI company launched in 2025 with Public Investment Fund backing, operationalises the strategy on the ground.
Authorities stress a balanced approach that pairs innovation and productivity gains with governance, regulation and privacy protection, aiming for responsible and sustainable use of AI as its economic benefits are distributed across Vision 2030 programmes.
