Saudi Basalt Named First Global Heritage Stone

Basalt from the volcanic lava fields (harrats) of western Saudi Arabia has been formally recognized as a Global Heritage Stone by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) in 2026, marking the Kingdom's first such designation. The recognition, listed as "Harrats Basalt," followed a nomination and documentation process led by the Saudi Geological Survey.

The designation covers volcanic basalt found across the Kingdom's western harrats, moving Saudi Arabia from having no listed heritage stones to securing its first entry on the international list. It highlights the historical, cultural, and scientific value of the stone, including its traditional role in construction, settlement, and economic life in western Saudi Arabia.

Why it matters

The recognition puts a spotlight on Saudi geological heritage and national geodiversity, celebrating a natural material that has shaped local building and daily life for generations. It is an international scientific honor that reflects the Kingdom's growing profile in earth sciences.

As of September 20, 2026, this is an international scientific designation only. There are no Saudi service platforms, fees, permit prices, or paid application steps tied to registering or using Harrats basalt as a Global Heritage Stone, and no defined validity period or renewal schedule. The listing is treated as a stable, ongoing inclusion on the IUGS heritage stone list.

The Saudi Geological Survey remains the relevant government body for the scientific and heritage aspects of the designation, having led the nomination, documentation, and announcement.
