Aramco Advances $200M Lithium Project for 2027

Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step in building its battery-minerals sector after Saudi Aramco and National Energy Services Reunited (NESR) signed an agreement for the Aramco 2027 Lithium Demonstration Project. The deal, valued at roughly US$200 million (about SAR750 million), paves the way for domestic production of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

Under the agreement, which may run for up to five years, the project will rely on direct lithium extraction technology — a method designed to recover lithium more efficiently than traditional approaches. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce approximately 2,000 tonnes

Commissioning and production are planned for late 2027, placing the Kingdom on a timeline to begin supplying a mineral that is central to electric-vehicle batteries and energy-storage systems worldwide.

Why it matters

Lithium is a key input for the batteries that power electric cars, smartphones, and large-scale renewable-energy storage. Developing local extraction and processing capacity supports Saudi Arabia's wider push to diversify its economy, create skilled jobs, and establish new industrial value chains beyond oil.

For residents and the business community, the project signals growing opportunities in advanced mining, clean-energy supply, and related industries. As demonstration output moves toward commercial scale, it could help position the Kingdom as a regional player in the fast-growing global battery-materials market.
