Saudi Arabia's digital economy has reached SAR 522 billion, after expanding by more than 75% from a base of less than SAR 300 billion. The milestone confirms the Kingdom's position as the largest digital economy in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The digital economy now accounts for about 16% of the country's gross domestic product, up from roughly 15% to 15.6% in earlier estimates. The non-oil digital component, driven by information and communications technology, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence services, represents a similar share of GDP.
Within the sector, operating revenues for information and communications technology reached around SAR 249.8 billion in 2024. Telecommunications activities generated the largest portion at about SAR 133.9 billion, while computer programming and related services contributed around SAR 31.1 billion. Operating expenditures stood at roughly SAR 122.2 billion, including about SAR 29.2 billion in employee compensation.
Trade figures showed imports of ICT goods rising to about SAR 67.9 billion in 2024, while exports and re-exports of such goods climbed to around SAR 25.8 billion.
The growth has translated into jobs. The number of positions in the digital sector reached about 410,000, up from around 150,000 previously. The Kingdom now counts nine technology "unicorn" companies, each valued at more than a billion dollars, and is targeting a regional market share of no less than 50% across major digital indicators.
For residents and businesses, the expansion reflects a broader push toward digital services that touch everyday life, from mobile connectivity to online platforms, and points to continued demand for skills and jobs in the technology field across the country.
