Modernization works at King Fahd Sports City in Riyadh are moving ahead, with completion expected in 2026. The project aims to prepare the landmark venue for a series of major international competitions, including the AFC Asian Cup 2027 and the FIFA World Cup 2034.
The upgrade involves significant structural changes to the stadium. Plans include removing the athletics track, lowering the pitch, and rebuilding the spectator stands to bring fans closer to the action. The venue will also receive upgraded lighting and cooling systems, along with a new cable-net roof designed to shelter spectators.
Once completed, the stadium is expected to hold around 70,000 seats. The reported capacity for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 stands at 68,463.
A wider destination
Beyond the stadium itself, the surrounding area is planned as a broader sports and leisure destination. The development is set to include a public park, a sports centre, a football academy, an amphitheatre, additional football pitches, a fan zone, a footgolf course, and commercial areas.
For Riyadh residents and the wider community, the project signals the capital's growing role in hosting world-class events. The expanded facilities are expected to offer new spaces for sport, recreation, and family outings once the works are complete.
No official ticket prices, visitor fees, operating hours, or booking procedures have been announced for the modernization project at this stage.
