Riyadh has announced a new strategic initiative, the Riyadh Digital District, led by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, with the goal of positioning the capital among the world's top 10 technology regions and establishing it as a global destination for tech talent, international technology companies, and digital entrepreneurship.
The initiative aims to attract and host firms and specialists across key digital sectors, including artificial intelligence and big data, cybersecurity, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, blockchain technologies, robotics, and unmanned aerial systems (drones). It is framed as part of wider efforts to grow the Kingdom's digital economy and non-oil GDP by creating a concentrated hub for IT, digital innovation, and creative digital industries.
What it means for residents and companies
As of late August 2026, the publicly available announcements set out strategic objectives and target sectors, but do not specify fees, rent schedules, or service charges for companies or individuals to join or operate within the district. No separate step-by-step registration or licensing process has yet been published through national platforms such as أبشر, قوى, ناجز, or مقيم; participation is currently described in general policy and investment terms rather than as a distinct government e-service.
National-level services continue to apply to workers and companies operating in the district, including iqama issuance and renewal, work permits, and Saudization compliance under Kingdom-wide rules. Foreign specialists and staff are expected to use existing work visa, iqama, and exit/re-entry frameworks, as there is currently no separate residency category or special visa class tied exclusively to the Riyadh Digital District.
سعودي ليفنج will continue to follow developments and report any official procedures or details as they are published.
