The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced on 2 September 2026 that Saudi Arabia will focus its Olympic and Paralympic strategy on 11 priority “podium sports” as the Kingdom prepares to host the Games in Riyadh 2034.
The chosen disciplines are athletics, judo, taekwondo, karate, jiu-jitsu, swimming, weightlifting, shooting, equestrian, fencing and wrestling. Officials said the selection was based on historical results, medals won, athlete performance indicators, specialist workshops, and detailed assessments of each sport’s realistic medal potential.
Why the focus matters
Concentrating resources on a defined group of sports is intended to give athletes clearer development pathways, targeted funding, and stronger long-term preparation ahead of 2034. Rather than spreading investment thinly, the strategy aims to build depth in disciplines where the Kingdom sees the best chance of reaching the medal podium.
The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its presence in international competition. The country’s delegation to the 2026 Asian Games features 144 athletes competing across 19 disciplines, reflecting the wider push to grow participation before the priority pathway narrows toward the eleven core sports.
For residents and sports fans across the Kingdom, the roadmap offers an early look at where national talent will be developed over the coming years, and signals a steady build-up toward one of the largest sporting events the region will host.
