Saudi Arabia has officially designated 2026 as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence,” making AI a whole‑of‑government priority across ministries and public digital platforms serving citizens, residents, and visitors.
At the heart of the shift is a National Data Lake that now links more than 430 government systems, enabling AI models to power unified digital services and secure data sharing across entities. In early 2026, the Kingdom also inaugurated Hexagon, a government‑operated data center in Riyadh with 480 MW capacity, built to host national AI workloads and large‑scale data for public platforms.
What it means for everyday services
On government portals, AI is being used to automate back‑office workflows such as document classification, extraction, and routing for permit, visa, and licensing systems. Chatbots and virtual assistants offer round‑the‑clock support and help users navigate services, while predictive models monitor demand, flag anomalies, and prioritize cases. In healthcare, AI tools support triage and diagnostic decision‑making in hospitals and digital health channels.
The infrastructure behind these features is expanding quickly. Data center capacity grew 42.4% between 2023 and 2024, and the Kingdom now hosts nine cloud regions, four of them under construction by global hyperscale providers, giving public platforms higher performance and resilience.
The ecosystem is also growing. By 2025 there were 664 companies working in data and AI, backed by $9.1 billion in funding across 70 investment deals. National training programs have taught more than one million citizens AI skills and produced over 11,000 specialists, from machine‑learning engineers to data scientists.
For the community, the goal is simpler, faster, and more accessible online services that reduce paperwork and in‑person visits, part of the wider push under رؤية السعودية 2030 to build a user‑centered digital government.
