The Saudi Central Bank raised its benchmark policy interest rates by 25 basis points effective 16 September 2026, adjusting the cost of borrowing and lending across the Kingdom's financial system.
Under the change, the repurchase agreement (repo) rate rose to 4.50% from 4.25%, while the reverse repurchase agreement (reverse repo) rate increased to 4.00% from 3.75%. Both new levels are currently in effect and will remain so until a further decision is issued.
What these rates mean
The repo and reverse repo are policy interest rates used in monetary operations between the Saudi Central Bank and licensed financial institutions. They are not retail service fees, and there are no citizen-facing steps tied to this change on platforms such as أبشر, مقيم, قوى, ناجز, نفاذ, or توكلنا. Access to the rates and related circulars is limited to institutions through the central bank's official channels.
Why it matters to residents
Commercial banks in Saudi Arabia use these benchmark rates to reprice loans and deposits denominated in ريال سعودي. Following a 25 basis point increase, adjustments typically flow through to variable-rate products and new credit offers, meaning residents and businesses may see slightly higher costs on new or floating-rate borrowing, alongside potential changes in deposit returns.
The rates carry no fixed expiry date and remain in force until the central bank announces a new decision. سعودي ليفنج will continue to monitor any further adjustments and their impact on households and businesses across the Kingdom.
