SFDA Approves Two Saudi AI Medical Software Tools

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has granted marketing authorization for two locally developed, AI-enabled medical software products in Saudi Arabia, in a decision issued on 10 September 2026. The two products are Dental IQ and SAARIA.

these are the first Saudi-developed AI-enabled medical software solutions in dentistry and ophthalmology to receive SFDA marketing clearance. The approval came after a review of each product's technical documentation and clinical evidence covering safety, performance, and intended use.

Both products fall under the medical software category, often referred to as software as a medical device. This means they were assessed through the SFDA's medical devices marketing authorization framework rather than any consumer-service platform. Under the current rules, digital health products that qualify as medical devices must comply with Medical Devices Marketing Authorization requirements.

The framework also sets specific expectations for AI and machine-learning-based medical devices, requiring developers to provide technical documentation, benefit-risk analysis, risk management, and verification and validation before products can reach the market.

Why it matters

For residents and patients across the Kingdom, the decision signals a growing role for locally built health technology in clinics and hospitals. Tools designed to assist dentists and eye specialists could support faster and more consistent assessments as adoption expands.

Current public information does not specify exact fees or a fixed validity period for this particular authorization. Saudi Living will share verified updates as further details become available.
