Saudi Central Bank Raises Repo Rate to 4.50%

The Saudi Central Bank has raised its main policy rates by 25 basis points, in a decision announced on 16 September 2026. The repurchase agreement (repo) rate now stands at 4.50%, while the reverse repurchase agreement (reverse repo) rate has been lifted to 4.00%.

The move followed a 25 basis point increase in the US Federal Reserve benchmark interest rate. The Central Bank framed its decision as part of its mandate to preserve monetary stability and support the wider financial system.

The new levels restore the rates set on 30 October 2025, when the repo rate had been reduced to 4.50% and the reverse repo rate to 4.00%. The repo rate is the rate at which the Central Bank lends funds to banks, while the reverse repo rate is the interest banks earn on funds they deposit with the Central Bank.

What it means for residents

These policy rates influence the SAR lending and deposit rates offered by Saudi banks. A higher repo rate tends to push up the cost of credit, which can affect the pricing of loans and financing over time. On the other side, higher rates can improve returns on short-term deposits and savings products.

The decision is a purely monetary policy step. It does not introduce any new fees, and it is not linked to government platforms or service validity periods. For households and businesses, the practical impact will show gradually through the rates banks apply to borrowing and savings in the Saudi Riyal.
