Saudi Central Bank Raises Repo Rate to 4.50%

The Saudi Central Bank raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points on 16 September 2026, lifting the rate from 4.25% to 4.50%. The move is aimed at preserving monetary stability in the Kingdom.

Alongside the change, the reverse repo rate was also increased by 25 basis points, rising from 3.75% to 4.00%. Both rates are key tools used to manage liquidity in the banking system and guide the cost of borrowing across the economy.

Why It Matters

The repo rate is the interest rate at which banks can borrow short-term funds from the central bank, while the reverse repo rate is what banks earn on deposits held with it. When these rates rise, the cost of financing typically increases, which can affect loans, mortgages, and savings returns for residents and businesses.

For households, a higher benchmark rate may translate into slightly higher costs on new personal and home financing, while savers could see improved returns on deposit products. Businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises, may also factor the change into their borrowing plans.

The decision reflects the central bank's ongoing efforts to maintain financial and monetary stability across the Kingdom's economy.
