The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has launched an artificial intelligence–based verification tool called ProVerifier to confirm the authenticity and regulatory compliance of products regulated by the Authority in the local market, beginning with pharmaceuticals, health products, and cosmetics.
ProVerifier is currently designed as a field inspection tool for the Authority's inspectors at points of sale and points of entry, acting as an intelligent assistant that supports regulatory decisions. An inspector takes a single image of the product's packaging or label, and the tool automatically extracts the data, cross-references it against approved regulations and standards, and generates an indicative compliance result within seconds.
the tool can cut product verification time by up to 98%, with a response time ranging between 6 and 20 seconds. This reduces operational burdens on inspectors, standardizes verification procedures, and allows greater focus on higher-priority risks.
The rollout is planned in phases. The first phase covers pharmaceuticals, health products, and cosmetics, while later phases will extend the tool to food products and medical devices circulating in the Saudi market and entering through ports.
What this means for consumers
ProVerifier is aimed at inspectors rather than the general public. For everyday consumers, the Authority offers the Tameni mobile application, which lets users search by product name or scan barcodes for foods, medicines, cosmetics, and medical devices, and access accurate information along with related alerts and recalls.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the safety of imported and circulating products and improve the quality and efficiency of regulatory operations at points of entry across the Kingdom.
