Saudi Arabia's operational data centre capacity climbed to 467 megawatts in the first quarter of 2026, spread across more than 60 facilities nationwide,
The milestone marks nearly sevenfold growth in just five years. Capacity rose from 68 megawatts in 2021 to 440 megawatts in 2025, then edged up to 467 megawatts in early 2026 — a gain of just over 6% in a single quarter and roughly a 6–7x expansion overall since 2021.
The build-out has drawn more than 20 companies, with cumulative investment reported at about 16 billion Saudi Riyal in data centres and related infrastructure, and exceeding 56.2 billion Saudi Riyal when broader digital infrastructure is included.
Why it matters
Officials frame the expansion as part of a national push to strengthen the digital economy, build out AI infrastructure, and position the Kingdom as a leading global data centre hub. In several 2026 assessments, Saudi Arabia ranked second worldwide for data centre market attractiveness and activity.
The current capacity is only the beginning. Strategic targets discussed in 2026 place the Kingdom's data centre pipeline at around 6.6 gigawatts by 2034 — more than ten times today's operational level.
For residents and businesses, the growth signals faster, more reliable local hosting, cloud services and AI capacity. As of Q1 2026, the 467 megawatts corresponds to roughly 3.7 terawatt-hours of annual electricity consumption, about half the output of a large nuclear reactor and around 0.38% of the Kingdom's total installed power generation capacity.
