Arabsat unveiled its new ARABSAT-50 satellite in Tunisia on 23 September 2026, during celebrations marking the operator's 50th anniversary. The announcement highlighted the next stage in the company's satellite fleet development.
The project is being carried out under an agreement signed with China Great Wall Industry Corporation to manufacture and launch the satellite. ARABSAT-50 will be built on China's DFH-3E platform and lifted into orbit aboard a Long March 3B launch vehicle from the Xichang launch site.
ARABSAT-50 is a high-power Ku-band satellite designed to support direct-to-home television broadcasting at the 26° East orbital position, one of the region's key broadcasting slots. The satellite is intended to strengthen service continuity and provide backup capacity, disaster recovery, and flexible redistribution of beams and frequencies.
Why it matters
For viewers and broadcasters across the region, the new satellite is aimed at improving the reliability of television services and adding resilience to the broadcasting infrastructure that carries channels into homes. The added capacity and flexibility can help ensure programming stays on air even during disruptions.
No launch date, retail offering, or consumer pricing was announced as part of the unveiling. The reveal focused on the satellite's technical capabilities and its role within Arabsat's long-term network plans.
